April is Occupational Therapy Month!
At Somerville Public Schools, our Occupational Therapists make a difference every single day 💙
“One of my favorite things about OT is how collaborative it is; we partner with students, teachers, and families to support success together!” - Ms. Traum
"My passion for occupational therapy stems from a deep desire to help others, and I am continually rewarded by witnessing my students’ growth and success in the years that follow within the district, as well as by the meaningful connections I build with each child—each one holding a special place in my heart." - Mrs. Clark
✨ Our OTs are creating engaging spaces like visual motor walls in our schools 🏫— helping students build coordination, focus, and self-regulation through movement, creativity, and fun!
From fine motor skills ✍️ to sensory support 🧠, from teamwork 🤝 to independence: our OT team supports the whole child.
👏 Thank you to our incredible Occupational Therapists for the passion, creativity, and care you bring to our district every day!

🎉 Our 4th Annual Life Skills Day at Somerville Middle School was a HUGE success! 🙌
This Chromebook-free day gave students the chance to dive into real-world, hands-on learning that truly matters. Across all grade levels, students explored essential life skills like emergency preparedness, fire safety, empathy, mindfulness, and civic responsibility 🏛️ .
Students built Adirondack chairs with Mr. Damaschke 🪑, learned about stroke education with RWJUH Somerset, explored water safety and lifeguarding with the YMCA 🌊 , and even tried sewing, woodworking, and creating calm bottles. Each experience was designed to help students build confidence, awareness, and practical skills they can carry with them beyond the classroom.
We are incredibly grateful to our amazing community partners, including Somerville Police 🚓, Fire Department 🚒, Councilwoman Stravic, RWJUH Somerset, NJ4S, and the YMCA for sharing their time and expertise.
A special THANK YOU 💛 to our dedicated staff for their creativity and planning, and to everyone who supported behind the scenes—it truly takes a team 🤝!
We are so proud of our students and thankful for a community that continues to champion meaningful, real-world learning experiences.

This year’s International SEL Day theme is Skills for Community >>> Skills for Career, and we couldnt think of a better theme for our Ville community. By taking a break from our routines, we help students build vital skills like self-awareness, empathy, and resilience so they can thrive in school and in life.
It truly takes a village, and we want to shout out the people who made this possible:
🐾 Our Ville administration for approving all the wonderful therapy dogs!
🧑🔬 Our amazing staff for creating fun, out-of-the-box activities: from classroom experiments and World Language yoga to the legendary human bicycle! 🚲
🛡️ Our security crew for keeping us safe and scanning everyone in.
🧠 Our counselors for putting together an AMAZING Mental Health Fair!
Whether you joined us for a dance party 💃, played some games 🧩, took a mindfulness breathing break 🧘, or tuned into a TED Talk, THANK YOU for celebrating the importance of mental health and overall well-being with us.
