This week is Somerville High School and Mrs. Jaime Reilly! Jaime Reilly teaches the Special Education Transition Class at Somerville High School. She has worked in special education for 23 years with students as young as preschool-age and up to high school. In Somerville High School's new transition program, students have recently graduated from high school and now work on job and functional skills. The class will start soon and operate an exciting new initiative called the Somerville Independent and Professional Skills (S.I.P.S.) Cool Beans Cafe. The goal of S.I.P.S. will be for students to gain hands-on experience working in a restaurant setting and learning skills that will transfer to future jobs, such as taking orders, making food and drinks, cleaning, managing money, and customer service. . . #allin4theville #somervilleschoolsnj

This week is Van Derveer Elementary School and Mrs. Melanie Scott! Mrs. Scott is a Special Education teacher of the Multiply Disabled K-2 class at Van Derveer Elementary School in Somerville. She has helped mentor upcoming seniors looking to join the education field through the Tomorrow's Teacher program in 2022-2023 school year. She has also helped mentor fellow teachers. Mrs. Scott is a teacher of students with different disabilities in one classroom where she differentiates her lesson plans to fit and meet the IEP requirements of all her students educational, emotionally, and physically. This requires a lot of flexibility and "go with flow" mentality on a daily and hourly basis. Mrs. Scott enjoys teaching all her students, helping to mold their minds for their greatest future potential. She looks forward to working with tomorrow's teacher students this year and many more years to come to help mold more amazing teachers to help teach our future. . . #allin4theville #somervillenjschools

Teacher Spotlight: SHS Teacher Mr. Michael Skomba! Mr. Skomba is a teacher of World History, Big History, and the Climate Project at Somerville High School. He is also a former graduate of Somerville High School (Class of 2005), 2018 Somerset County Teacher of the Year and 2020 NHSSCA Strength Coach of the Year. Mr. Skomba enjoys teaching long form history because it helps orientate students in the present and helps them better predict the future! He is also the Strength and Conditioning Coach, an assistant Football Coach, and the Yearbook Club advisor! Calling all engineers, tinkerers, and programmers! The SHS Robotics Team will be hosting our 3rd annual Robotics Day. Students entering 8th - 12th grade can come and get a taste of what it's like to solve problems using robots. At the conclusion of the event, teams will put their creations to the test in competition with a chance to win cool prizes. The event will be on Sunday, September 10th, from 8am-6pm. No prior experience is necessary! Participation is free, and pizza will be provided. Register at bit.ly/RoboticsDay2023 by 9/4/23. Limited spots are available.
