governors educator of the year 2026

As we close out another incredible school year at Somerville Public Schools, we were proud to recognize the outstanding educators and educational services professionals featured at last night's Board of Education meeting.

Each year, in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Education, Somerville Public Schools celebrates educators who inspire students, support their colleagues, and help build a school community rooted in respect, care, and success.

We are thrilled to honor this year’s recipients:

Mrs. Christine Garot - Van Derveer School Educator of the Year: Mrs. Garot is recognized for creating an environment where students can explore and grow, and is viewed as an empathetic listener who cares deeply for her students.

Mrs. Nancy De Nero - Van Derveer School Educational Services Professional of the Year: Mrs. De Nero is praised for her patience and dedication to helping vulnerable students feel supported in their learning and math work.

Mrs. Tara Morash — Somerville Middle School Teacher of the Year:

Mrs. Morash is viewed as the “total package,” and brings high expectations, compassion, and energy to her classroom while also making an impact beyond the school day as a coach. Her therapy dog, Jackson, is another meaningful part of the positive environment she creates for students.

Mrs. Nashwa Tauriello — Somerville Middle School Support Specialist of the Year:

A caring school counselor, Mrs. Tauriello creates a child-centered and supportive environment where students feel heard, valued, and understood. Her ability to listen and help students navigate their feelings makes a lasting difference.

Mr. Colin Williamson — Somerville High School Educator of the Year:

Mr. Williamson encourages inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking in his classroom. As a coach and peer leadership coordinator, he also helps students grow as leaders and active members of the school community.

Mrs. Carrie Capozzi — Somerville High School Educational Specialist of the Year:

An innovative and deeply supportive counselor, Mrs. Capozzi has established meaningful systems of support, including a food pantry, and works closely with multilingual learners. Students count on her guidance during important and sometimes stressful moments, including the college application process.

Many of these honorees were inspired by their own former teachers and coaches, and now they continue that legacy by showing up for students during moments of challenge, celebration, and growth.

Thank you to our honorees for your dedication, compassion, and commitment to Somerville students. You make us so very proud!
