Safety Tips for our Somerville students

We know Halloween is a fun, exciting time for our Somerville community! Yet, we always want to ensure that our students stay safe and have an enjoyable experience while partaking in Halloween and trick-or-treating events. Here are some tips to help you have fun celebrating Halloween responsibly and safely.

1. Costume Safety:

• Choose costumes that fit properly to prevent tripping or falling (watch out for capes!)

• Use non-toxic makeup instead of masks that can obstruct your vision.

• Make sure your costume is made of flame-resistant materials.

2. Reflective Gear:

• Wear reflective tape or accessories on your costume to be visible in the dark.

• Carry a flashlight or glow sticks to light your way while trick-or-treating.

3. Trick-or-Treating Tips:

• Always travel in a group with friends or family.

• Stay on well-lit streets and use sidewalks.

• Cross streets at designated crosswalks and obey traffic rules.

• Avoid cutting through alleys or on other people’s property.

4. Stranger Danger:

• Do not enter anyone’s home or vehicle, even if they offer treats.

• Do not accept homemade or unwrapped treats from strangers.

5. Candy Safety:

• Inspect your candy before eating. Discard any open or tampered packages.

• Do not consume homemade treats unless they come from a trusted source.

6. Pet Safety:

• Be cautious around pets, even if they seem friendly.

• Do not approach animals you don’t know.

7. Allergies:

• If you have food allergies, inform your parents/guardians about your treats.

• Carry an allergy-friendly treat with you in case you receive something unsafe.

8. Curfew:

• Respect the designated curfew set by your parents or guardians.

• Make sure you return home before dark.

9. Communication:

• Carry a fully charged smartphone for emergencies.

• Share your route with your parents or guardians.

10. Respect Others:

• Use polite manners and say “thank you” when receiving treats.

11. Alcohol and Drugs:

• Halloween is for fun, not for alcohol or drugs. Avoid them entirely!

12. Be Aware of Your Surroundings:

• Stay aware of your surroundings and be alert at all times.

Halloween is a fun and memorable experience for our Somerville students, but please be mindful and keep safety in mind. Have a fantastic time, be respectful, and ensure your Halloween is filled with memories and lots of candy! Happy Halloween!
