teachers awards

Each year school districts from around the state, including the Somerville School District, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Education, recognizes the outstanding dedication and accomplishments of educators in our schools through a program called the Governor’s Educator Of the Year.  As a result, schools are asked to select a Teacher of the Year AND an Educational Services Professional of the Year such as counselor, school psychologist or instructional assistant to name a few. These individuals must be exceptionally skilled educators who motivate and inspire you, our students, and who build strong cultures of respect and success within our community.

In Somerville High School’s efforts to select those individuals, we put out a call for nominations to our staff, parents, and our student body.  As a result, we received several nominations and held a selection committee meeting to select a Teacher of the Year and an Educational Services Professional of the Year.

It is my privilege and honor to announce Somerville High School’s Governor’s Educators of the Year:

  • Educational Services Professional of the Year:
    • SHS School Counselor - Mrs. Thompson

  • Teacher of the Year:
    • SHS Social Studies Teacher - Ms. Astrella

Thank you both for all that you do for our entire school community!  We are fortunate to have you both here at the Ville and on behalf of the entire student body and faculty, congratulations!

And thank you to our entire staff for all you do for our students every day!
