Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s):

At the Somerville School District, we work hard throughout the school year to provide our
students with engaging and challenging work. Every effort is made to introduce our students to
high quality literature which expands their minds and interests as readers and writers. During
the summer, we ask that you support your child as they continue in their development as
lifelong learners through summer reading.

Summer Reading is essential to help our students continue learning over the summer, to build
social-emotional development, go on an adventure with a good book and promote the
importance of lifelong learning. Let us work together to strengthen school-family partnerships
and take the necessary steps to promote curiosity, enthusiasm and cultivate a greater love of
reading and writing.

As we transition into the summer months, we are thrilled to share information about summer
reading for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. In each building, the
reading assignments were created to give exposure to multiple genres while giving students a
choice. In some grades, there are shared texts for a shared experience. We kindly ask that you

the highest quality education that promotes individual excellence, whole child development and equity for all students.”

We welcome your continued partnership in enhancing your child’s academic achievement,
boosting their resilience and social-emotional wellness as we enter a new school year. We will
see you in September and look forward to hearing about all the books your child has read.
If you have questions about the summer reading information, please contact the building
administration.

Be well and stay safe. Enjoy the summer.
